Educational Tour - National Zoo & Museum Orang Asli @ from RM130 per person

Zoo Negara Malaysia is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organization established to create the first local zoo for Malaysians. Zoo Negara is now 45 years old and has matured into a well-known zoo all around the world. We have a total of over 5137 animals from 459 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Zoo Negara covers 110 acres of land which is situated only 5km from the city of Kuala Lumpur. Over the years, the zoo has transformed itself to an open concept zoo with over 90% of its animals kept in spacious exhibits with landscape befitting its nature. We are working in making sure that the old zoo concept is changed entirely.

In order to extend the educational potential of Zoo Negara, the Society obtained services of a full-time Education Consultant, Mr Ken Rubeli. A forester by training, Mr Rubeli gained an intimate knowledge of Malaysia’s wildlife during four years work in Peninsular Malaysia’s National Park where he set up a Nature Study Centre for student groups. Zoo Education Service
has been accepted as the title under which the Zoo Negara education programmes will operate. The service aims to establish through all its programmes a connecting theme of environmental conservation. Malaysia has a rich native fauna, but in the jungle, wildlife observation is very difficult indeed. Meanwhile habitat destruction is proceeding at an alarming rate. By placing a clear display of a wide variety of native and exotic fauna, and by setting of an Education Service to draw attention to these animals and their plight in nature, the Society has moved the zoo towards achieving its optimum value to the community.

These Educational Packages / activities are design to ensure a memorable yet educational visit !

Orang Asli is Malay for original people. Today there are 100,000 Orang Asli. Just over half of them live in the jungle; the others are coastal people and often fishermen. They speak different languages and many of them are animists.

The first display in the museum is a huge map of Malaysia, which shows where the 18 ethnic groups of Orang Asli live. Then you pass a portrait gallery. I liked this very much, as the pictures showed their different features and characteristics.

It was easy to recognise the Negritos who have lived in Malaysia for more than 8000 years and who may be considered as the first inhabitants. They are mostly dark-skinned and frizzy-haired. They are nomads and pride themselves on their mobility. They have few possessions, as this would be a hindrance to their lifestyle. Although some have left the tribe and live Kuala Lumpur or other cities comforted by televisions, DVD players, computers, and mobile telephones.

The scale models of long houses and other shelters were a good example of how the Orang Asli lives. There is also a large display of hunting weapons such as blowpipes, traps, and spears. Fishing and hunting monkeys, wild boars, squirrels, and other small animals are done by the men. The spoils are brought home and eaten.
